Seal of Civic Readiness

The Salt Lake City School District seal features a torch, stars, and text.

  • The Seal of Civic Readiness (SCR) is a formal recognition high school students may receive upon meeting graduation and SCR requirements. It is open to students in grade 9-12 and requires participation in the Salt Lake City School District Seal of Civic Readiness Showcase.

     

  • The Seal of Civic Readiness Showcase occurs each April. It is when students present their civic engagement experiences and demonstrate their civic knowledge, skills, and attittudes to judges from the community.

    • Complete one of the two pathways to create a civic action project engaging with the community to make a postive difference.
    • Present your civic project at the Seal of Civic Readiness Showcase and receive a qualifying score from the judges.
    • Meet Salt Lake City School District graduation requirements.
    • Pathway 1: Teacher Supported Pathway
      • This pathway is for students who engage in their community, develop a civic project, and plan to participate in the SCR Showcase during class with the support of a teacher.
    • Pathway 2: Independent Pathway (available Fall 2026)
      • This pathway is for students who are already civically engaged in their community and can develop a civic project and plan for participation in the SCR Showcase independently.
    • Encourages students to become informed and engaged member of the community essential for democratic citzenry.
    • Fosters authentic and meaningful student engagement in the community.
    • Highlights students using their civic knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a real-world context and in ways that make a positive difference in their community.
    • Extends students learning about civics to students practicing and participating in civics.
    • Research suggests a positive correlation between civic learning experiences in high school and the future voting habits of young adults. Circle Growing Voters research.
